A Stranger In Paris

By Megan Thomas

It’s the first in Karen Webb’s three-part memoir, A French Life. Though a memoir, it reads like it could also be fiction in that each event flows smoothly into the other.

Karen goes to uni in Aberystwyth and gets engaged, which soon transforms her dreams of a life like the literature she consumes to going down the pub, watching rugby and feeling sorry for herself. A swirl of events lead to her fleeing to Paris to find her post-engagement, now-ex-lover, with a job lined up as an au pair.

She’s got an English degree, average French skills, no household experience, three wealthy Parisian children in her responsibility and a lover to find. What could go wrong?
