A Year In The Wild

By Megan Thomas

Firstly, I’d like to give some explanation as to why I’ve been so digital with my reading lately. I’ve started a podcast and video show called @babbleshow alongside the most wonderful team, where I interview authors (though eventually, anyone in the arts) and so I’ve been doing extensive reading for my interviews and when publishers/authors send you copies to read, it’s usually a digital edition. I’ve also been dabbling in audiobooks for the first time and I’m loving it. Now that that’s out the way…

Secondly, a bit of a summary. A Year In The Wild by James Hendry is a story told in emails between family members. The two brothers, Hugh and Angus, detest each other and so their parents send them to work in a private game reserve in the South African bush for a year in the hopes it makes them appreciate one another more. Initially, all it does is provide ample opportunity for the two to hate each other more, but there’s nothing like nearly getting eaten by a wild animal to put things in perspective. Scarier than the animals, though, are the guests who are paying top dollar to be there (and so think it’s reasonable to send ahead for specific animal sightings).

Thirdly, a review. Lighthearted and outrageously sarcastic, I thought this was going to be a quick laugh, but there were some tears in there too. This was the first audiobook I’ve ever listened to and it was a wonderful way to consume it, especially in the author’s own voice.
